Apple Tablet & Amazon Kindle to offer new casual gaming avenues?
- January 22, 2010 09:58 AM PST
Having already seen great success on the iPod Touch and iPhone, both Apple's upcoming Tablet and Amazon's Kindle will soon be getting a wide variety of interactive entertainment
With Apple recently marketing their iPhone and iPod Touch portable devices as gaming platforms, casual gaming on the go has seen a bit of a twilight. Independent developers have been enjoying increased exposure thanks to low prices and easy availability on Apple's App Store, and with the recent rumors that Apple's soon-to-be-announced Tablet will also feature a wide variety of games (many rumored to come straight from top shelf developer Electronic Arts), it's become evident that the multimedia conglomerate has recognized the importance of the gaming dollar.
Joining in on the casual craze is Amazon's digital reading device, the Kindle. This morning, Amazon announced a Kindle SDK that will allow developers access to Kindle-based PC, Linux, and Mac emulators for programming purposes. Amazon also announced a partnership with EA Mobile (The Sims 3, NFL 10) who are slated to start developing games for the Kindle. What these games are, and how they'll play on the greyscale Kindle are still a mystery.
Whether it's playing games on Apple's upcoming 10/11-inch Tablet or on Amazons acclaimed digital reader, there's no denying that our office commutes suddenly seem much busier, and much shorter.

Train_of_thought, get a job.... seriously. 500 dollars isn't that much money. Most people make that in a week. The apple tablet is pretty much a more portable lap top. Laptops are at least 800 to 1000 dollars. In fact apple laptops are 12 to 1500. 500 dollars for this and i'll be all over it. That would be one heck of a price for a tablet PC.

It makes sense that the iSlate (or whatever they call it) will run games - it's been such a spectacularly successful part of the iPhone/iDevice business for the past year. I'll be interested to see if they scale games for the larger screen, or if we see games and apps run as "widgets" on the new device.
As for the Kindle, this strikes me as an early overture for a color device. I'd be interested to hear from someone that has seen the SDK and whether they can attest to what it will allow for in future.

i go to school, that's my job. i wouldn't be caught dead with anything Apple makes even if someone decided to piss on my grave in the end. go to a 3rd world country that's poor and say that $500 is easy to make because i bet you they'd say other wise.

The refresh rate of the Kindle pretty much limits it to turn based games. Interactive fiction seems like an easy fit, but you could also do turn based strategy games like chess.

Yeah most people did make that kind of money. In today's economy not to many people waste their money on things like this as they once did.

Since when is 500 dollars not a lot of money? That's a real douchebag thing to say brothaman, I work my ass off 40+ hours a week and Yes, 500 is still a lot of money to me. At least it is when you have your own apartment and pay all of your own bills. What I'd really like to know is who are all of these "most people" that are bringing in 500 every week? Just an ignorant comment dude... Especially in this economy.
