Take a few moments to sort out the image brought about by this review's title. We're talking about a god of war transformed by a self-evolving galactic scourge. That is who you play in this game.

It's a blast. For awhile.

If the rest of the game were as good as the main character's powers and design, it'd be a different story, but that's just it. The enemy and mission variety doesn't compare favorably to all the crazy stunts you can pull--and if you aren't met with new challenges, why think up new stunts?

There's still a fair amount you can do, and it's still a sandbox world where you can jump on tanks, peel their covers off, kill and eat the people inside, and use their cannons to destroy buildings. Surprisingly, this eventually gets stale, and the story isn't enough to pull the whole thing into "really great" territory. Seeing more variety in the surrounding world would disproportionately boost the game's value.

Okay i love this game u don't own it u probably should. the game has great innovative concepts, fun to play, lots of replayability, lots of powers and great action. The problems are the repetitive missions it feels like the same kind of mission every time u play it, the horrible AI is well horrible for many reasons like they cant can't aim and they run around to much, the game feels cliched at times and it couldn't possibly live up to the hype people were giving it. But i highly recommend buying this game.

It feels like just that, a prototype...

Pros Cons
Engaging story Ugly visuals
Intense action Annoying audio
  Poor storytelling
  Braindead computer AI

Prototype is a game that feels like it released before it should have, its unpolished, it has terrible voice acting and during certain points is just a chore to play; it feels like a prototype to a bigger and better game. Now normally I don't put a major emphasis on graphics but in Prototype's case I feel I need to make an exception: its not that the visuals are bad (when the action gets going and there are perhaps hundreds of different NPCs on screen, including civilians, foot soldiers, tanks, APCs, helicopters and the infected you will be impressed with the fluidity of it all as the frame rate rarely dips and the camera keep up with everything that you are doing) its that they are bland and boring and basic.
Buildings repeat over and over all with the same windows and rooftops, in fact, aside from a few obvious landmarks (the Empire State Building, Time's Square) I'd be hard pressed to tell you it looked anything like Manhattan it is ridiculously generic...but hey, at least its big (well actually its' size works against it; because everything looks the same its not that fun to travel the city just to enjoy the scenery, like most open-world games.) On the plus side Alex is quiet well animated and some of the powers look absolutely devastating.
The voice acting in the game is just horrendous and the main reason the story in cut scenes in nearly unbearable (which is disappointing, because the Web of Intrigue is quiet interesting) . Its annoying to watch a cinematic where the actors sound like they are just reading straight off the script in a rehearsal: no emotion and no pausing for proper dramatic effect or even punctuation, in one scene no one stops at the end of a sentence they just keep going...and its a long cut scene. Its also hard to care for any of the characters when the voice acting is this bad, not to mention contradictory; for what ever reason at random points during the game the characters (Alex especially) would say things that were completely out of character, like Alex, suddenly questioning his murderous actions...AS HE'S RUNNING OVER PEOPLE WITH A TANK!
Finally, at odd times the challenge just skyrockets, and its not that it becomes more difficult, just frustrating. You suddenly will have your powers taken away (for really stupid reasons too, the first time comes right after a boss fight where you seemingly win the fight only to discover, "no sorry, but Alex was the one who got beat and the boss is fine"; you'll know when it happens, and its headshakingly stupid) and after losing you're powers the army and the infected send seemingly EVERYTHING after you with no good way to escape as they can apparently see through walls.
I've been harsh on Prototype so far but ultamitely its not a terrible game, it just isn't all that great either. There will be people who enjoy the voilence and the little else that the game gives you and if you are that kind of "pass the controller around" player who normally has others watching while you play than this is a good game to get (or rent, I'd say rent first) as it may be ugly and have terrible storytelling (though an intriguing back story) but it is chaotic and violent and it just never stops.

Not quite perfect

Pros Cons
Loads of content Poor storytelling
Intense action Repetitive gameplay
Tight controls Braindead computer AI
Innovative concepts

This game is a blast once you unlock multiple powers and rain destruction on your enemies. Unfortunately the enemy AI is shallow and easy to evade, the missions are often lengthy and repetitive, and the additional side events are unimaginative except for the glide to a bullseye event. The story is very bare and merely a framework for the missions, and the hidden story that you earn from consuming people are all in seizure inducing flashbacks that ranger from interesting buy way too short at 20 seconds, or "why did they include that". Basically this feels like Spiderman web of shadows, but you are evil and can rip people to shreds and change identities. Once you play this game for a while, you realize he controls a lot like spiderman, but thats a good thing. So if you're looking for a sandbox city, this is a good place to start, but don't expect variety or intelligent enemies.

One Biological Weapon You WANT To Use

Pros Cons
Epic boss fights Poor storytelling
Intense action Unresponsive controls

Just to get it out of the way right off the bat...Prototype is almost identical to Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. This time around though you have a new IP with a new main hero and slightly new story with the old Hulk game play. That isn't to say that Prototype is bad in any way, it is actually quite the opposite. This game is a blast from start to finish. The amount of chaos on screen at one time is very impressive. I understand that a lot of people are bashing this game because the graphics aren't up to par with "today's standards". You have to look at the big picture, looking at a screen shot of this game and you wouldn't really think anything of it. Now watch the game in motion with about 6 helicopters, 4 tanks, around 10 hunters, and countless infected and military troops with no frame rate issues and you'll see why the graphics aren't up to par. The story....is somewhat there and somewhat not. Some of the cut scenes are great and get you interested in what is going on in this virtual world. Then...some of them aren't that great and usually cut back to game play before anything is fleshed out. Needless to say the story isn't why you come to this game. It is the total chaos that ensues every 5 minutes. Aside from little flaws in this game there isn't really much to gripe about unless you just have a grudge for the game. The controls can be a little wonky at times but nothing that will ruin the game for you. I wanted to keep this short and sweet but try the game out for yourself. There are a myriad of powers to unlock and upgrade, tons of side quests to do ( although repetative ) that help lengthen the game and help you gain experience, and last but not least...the ability to be one bad ass mother f***er that will have you fighting entire armies of infected and humans in one 5 minute sitting.

Prototype "that other sandbox game"

Pros Cons
Intense action Ugly visuals
Addictive gameplay Not enough content
Just plain fun

Well i have had my copy of prototype for about 2 days now and I must admit i was drawing alot of comparisons to infamous at first glance.

Prototype is no stranger to action, and thus throws you into the thick of it in the first 5 minutes..to which i was blown away. Your character-Alex Mercer is a bonafide bad-ass to which he answers to no one or so it seems.

Graphics:
*Equipping Flameshield*
Prototype honestly looks like slightly better xbox 1 graphics, I haven't checked out the ps3 version, but in my opinon its cousin (infamous) looks better, it is DEFINITELY sub-HD (that little 720p on the back of the box is a lie), but this is probably due to most of the processing going towards the engine and combat systems. The environment is modeled after New york but its nothing we haven't seen before, there's not alot of detail to it. Think of Prototype like a Honda Civic-Ugly body, but runs like a dream.

Sound:
The audio is nice, and the sounds of bodies splicing and marines screaming is quite appetizing.

Presentation:
Prototype is shown as an intense sandbox game. You can abuse the environment like no other without any frame rate hiccups. The game is very gory and seeing alex slice through people and have limbs flying everywhere is fantastic. there is nothing conservative about this game..it is always throwing some sort of action at you.

Gameplay:
Prototype is a true gamer's game..not a developer's game. What i mean is that there is never a sort of limitation as to what you can do..you can drive tanks, helicopters, and an apc, as well as call in military strikes. The devs knew what we all want to do in an open-world game and that is "F*ck Sh*t Up!" Being able to commandeer military gear is a nice addition to Alex's wide array of infection_based powers. Oh and did i mention he can fashion a bladed whip? The web of intrigue is a nice take on storytelling you dont have to complete all of it..this is a way of letting you find out about as much of the story you want without it being forced on you. Prototype has the best free-roaming system of any sandbox game out there, you run faster than the cars and you can jump at about 30ft, not to mention as you run alex automatically vaults and pushes eerything out of his way. The game engine runs smoothly and theres never a hitch in the action. If you have ever played "Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Desruction" then you'll be right at home with this one.

Closing:
Prototype is quite frankly, addicting and awesome. Granted i wish it wasn't so ugly..but that is a sacrifice you have to make this generation if you want a good game. Well at least for mutliplats. I wish it had more replayability, but I sure did get my money's worth.
